Here are some books that I recommend. These books have inspired me and pushed my thinking about reading, teaching and learning. I will update this list as I continue to read and be inspired!
The Lesson Planning Handbook by Peter Brunn
Peter’s book is one of the most powerful books I have read about planning effective lessons. He shares a thought-provoking process for planning lessons that encourage and support student thinking necessary for independent learning. Peter also suggest teacher facilitation techniques that foster intentional student engagement.
Pathways to the Common Core by Lucy Calkins, Mary Ehrenworth, Christopher Lehman
Lucy and her colleagues have done an excellent job of helping me to understand what the Common Core Standards say. Lucy and colleagues suggest ways in which to implement the Common Core Standards without completely overhauling what teacher already know and understand. They also describe the type of reading (“within the four corners of the text”) students will be expected to do.
